Anyone got any idea on what the purpose behind the Night Light was/is?

Honestly I'm of the same opinion as you are Blazingice26, though I have to hand it to LadyD for the practical use because it's very true; sometimes fire really is bad.

However, my hat goes off to Full Metal Kirby, that idea is ingenuity in it's purist form. It's never even crossed my mind once that night lights could be exceptionally convenient down in the ruins.

I love the night light. Only use it in the caves and ruins though. There's so much nightmare fuel on the ground in the ruins its a great light source and it saves me burning logs. I think its a very useful item, at least for my playing style anyway.

It's pretty useless outside of ruins, about as useless as the pre-buff Hambat. Provides no heat, can't cook food, drains your sanity, and is just too expensive to use decently.

Even in the ruins I'd still prefer a simple campfire.

My mobile light source of choice in the caves and ruins is definitely a miner's helmet. I like my walking cane too much to feel great about using a lantern. Now if only I could combine a lantern and a walking cane together we'd be in so much business.

and even with the ruins considered, the night light existed way before it did, so that obviously wasn't even its intended use. I'm going to guess it was just one of those things that seemed cool at the time but wasn't fleshed out

Note that the Night Light only drains sanity if you're too close to it. You can stand in its light without losing sanity if you choose the correct distance.

I wish they'd offer a torso item for emitting light, that way you could wear a Tam O'Shanter/Beefalo Hat/Garland for sanity boosting, Walking Cane for speedy worm avoidance and the torso item for emitting light.

I guess that'd just make spelunking just too easy, right? ;)

There is a torso light item

It'd be nice if the mosquito sacks could be used in place of Spider Healing Glands because they do about the same thing, don't they?

Rainometer I think is mostly for "plant seeds... nnnnnOW."

Compass I don't have a clue, I've never actually made one. It'd be neat if you could set it to always point towards an item on the map say, your firepit.

But when have you ever seen a mosquito?

But by the time it's told me, it's already raining

Compass just tells you the direction your camera is facing.

From a designers stand point, to offer the player an alternative means to provide light, like with the luxury ax; however, I like to think it's used to train baby shadow monsters to have a tolerance to light. Wouldn't want their first adventure in greeting the sun to be met with angry fire, yes?

I've been playing with it recently and I swear to god it's devouring hallucinations because I'll be fighting them and then... poof. They're gone and I'm still more bonkers than well, a player at the sanity level to fight them.

I don't know if this is intended or a weird glitch my game is having.

edit: forgot to mention for some reason they shiver by it. It was summer.

That actually wouldn't be that bad of a buff for it, perhaps not completely eliminating them though. It'd be a nice trade off for not getting reagents from the shadows and having to stay insane.

As a matter of fact, that's a worthy suggestion if it's not already intended.

It doesn't eliminate all of them, it's some weird 1/5 or so. I still haven't figured out if my game is glitching them out or not though.

THE  NIGHT  LIGHT  REQUIRES  SUBSTANCE  AND  WILL  TAKE  IT  AS  IT  DEEMS  FIT.  THE  FIRE  MUST  CONTINUE  TO  BURN.
